When We Were Young

So this drawing needs a tiny but of backstory.

The one of the left is me. On the right is a friend of mine. We've known each other for over 20 years.

This drawing is my attempt at re-creating a photo of us from memory. I was around 7 years old, and my friend was about 9.

I wanted to do something special for her for a birthday present this year, and being tight on money meant I had to make something. I'm really not crafty or terribly creative, and the more I thought about it, the more I realized I wanted to draw the two of us. As I pondered how I was going to perfectly capture our insane level of awesomeness/sexiness, I kept remembering photos of us as kids and how silly they always were. Then this one photo kept popping in my head. She was wearing these cute black overalls, adorable blunt cut hair-do, and I just perpetually looked disheveled (I liked to chop my own hair off and always wore over-sized hand-me-down clothing. I didn't care because that just meant I could wreck my clothes and it wouldn't be a big deal!).

I couldn't find the actual picture so I had to improvise a bit.

You might wonder why the one pole is yellow. I don't know about the rest of the world, but here we have some telephone poles that have thick wires coming off them and into the ground. Those wires are covered with a thick plastic yellow tube. When we were kids, we were always swinging off the thing that was in front of her house, and naturally getting scolded for it. Never stopped us. We spent a lot of time at her house. Wrecking the yellow plastic tube, playing pretend. They were really good years from what I can recall. We had a lot of fun together. And so I decided that trying to create my own version of that awesome time in our lives would be a good gift to a long time friend.
